Baffa Audu and His Family

Alhaji Abu had only one younger brother, Audu.

Audu was married to a woman named Lailu, and together they had five children.

Unlike Alhaji Abu and his wife, they experienced no difficulty having children after their marriage.

Because of this behaviour, he began watching Sodangi and her brother closely.

What irritated him most was the deep love and attention their parents gave them.

He could not understand why Alhaji Abu and Mulasa protected their children so carefully and provided them with everything they wanted.

Baffa Audu’s Jealousy Develops Into Hatred

Baffa Audu also disliked seeing Sodangi’s family acquire modern or valuable possessions.

Whenever something new appeared in the settlement, the first people likely to own it were Sodangi and her brother.

This increased the bitterness inside him.

Gradually, his jealousy developed into strong hatred for Sodangi.

Nothing she did ever appeared correct in his eyes.

Whenever she performed a task in his presence, he immediately found fault with it and behaved as though she were incapable of doing anything properly.

His constant criticism made Sodangi uncomfortable.

Whenever Baffa Audu was present, she could not relax or behave freely.

Instead, she remained quiet, kept her distance and carefully avoided attracting his attention.

Sodangi Loves Traditional Fulani Activities

Despite her young age, Sodangi wanted to experience every important Fulani tradition.

There was almost no traditional activity she had not attempted.

She participated in cattle herding and enjoyed carrying fresh milk to the market.

According to her, these activities were not difficult or unpleasant.

She found them interesting and exciting.

Sodangi loved the open land, the animals and the active lifestyle of the people in the settlement.

She did not want to remain at home while others participated in the daily responsibilities of Fulani life.

Sodangi Insists on Following Sada to the Forest

Whenever her elder brother, Sada, gathered the cattle and prepared to take them into the bush, Sodangi insisted on following him.

She would repeatedly beg and argue until someone permitted her to join him.

At first, Mulasa refused to allow her daughter to go.

She worried about Sodangi’s safety and believed the journey might be too difficult for her.

However, Sodangi refused to accept her mother’s decision quietly.

If she was prevented from accompanying Sada, she could spend the entire day crying.

Mulasa Finally Allows Sodangi to Join Her Brother

After repeatedly trying to stop her, Mulasa eventually became tired of the constant arguments and tears.

She finally allowed Sodangi to accompany Sada whenever he took the cattle out.

Mulasa loved her daughter deeply and could not tolerate seeing her unhappy.

For that reason, Sodangi’s parents rarely refused her requests.

They tried to protect her, but they also wanted her to enjoy her childhood and experience the traditions she loved.

Their extraordinary affection, however, continued to fuel Baffa Audu’s jealousy.

Sodangi’s Freedom Increases Her Uncle’s Resentment

Sodangi’s parents viewed her adventurous nature as a sign of intelligence and courage.

Baffa Audu saw the same behaviour differently.

To him, every freedom she received was another example of excessive love and favouritism.

The more her parents supported her, the more his resentment grew.

Sodangi remained unaware of how dangerous jealousy could become, but she already understood that she could never feel comfortable in her uncle’s presence.
