With great difficulty, he comforted her until she stood and performed ablution.

He also performed ablution, and together they prayed. Their supplications were long, and most of them were for Yaya Imran and Dada.

When they finished, he held her hand. In a soft voice, he said, “What do we do now? A groom is supposed to enter with a chicken, but Twiny and I came empty-handed. I hope the close friends will forgive us. But insha Allah, we will repay this debt on the day you give birth to Haysam and Imran for us.”

She smiled shyly and lowered her head.

He also smiled again, pulled her into his arms, and prayed for blessings upon her.

Still wrapped in shyness, she answered, “Ameen, thank you. If it is only chicken, we have forgiven you. Even if you had brought it, we would not have eaten it.”

He asked, “Oh, so you both planned that together?”

“No,” she replied quickly.

He said, “Tell the truth, Lailaty. It is better for us to know, so we can understand how to manage the lives of these close friends before the two of you gang up against us one day.”

She laughed softly and tried to move away from him.

He stood too, still smiling, lifted her gently, and carried her toward the bed.

When she tried to pull away, he stopped her gently. The shyness between them deepened, but the tenderness of marriage slowly replaced the fear and grief of the day.

That night, despite the pain surrounding their family, Ma’aruff and Lailah began their married life under the mercy of Allah, with sorrow in their hearts and love trying to find its place.

Ja’afar and Shariffat

The difference between Ja’afar and Ma’aruff was that Ja’afar first focused only on comforting his own princess, Shariffat.

He advised her about the importance of patience, even though it felt as if he was advising himself too.

He wiped the tears that had wet her face, then held her and stood up with her.

Their closeness made her very shy. She could not bear it, so she lowered her head and looked at their feet.

He placed his hand under her chin and raised her face gently.

In a whisper, he said, “Sherry, look at me.”

She shook her head, meaning no.

He lowered his voice further and brought his face closer to hers.

“Why?” he asked.

“I feel shy, Yaya J,” she answered, while the tears she had been holding back rolled down her beautiful face.

He swallowed the heaviness in his throat, then pulled her properly into his arms and hugged her.

In a choked voice filled with pain, he asked, “Do you want me to cry too?”

She shook her head and sniffed.

He began patting her back gently in comfort.

Then he continued, “Be patient. Or rather, let us both be patient. This is how Allah planned everything, and we cannot change it. Strengthen me, Sherry, because I am close to falling too.”

He added, “I feel as if we have not been fair to Dada and Yaya Imran today. It feels as if we placed our own need above their condition. Only fourteen days after an unjust sentence was passed on them, without us even being sure of their freedom, our marriage was conducted. Why could Mammah and the others not understand?”

Shariffat burst into painful tears because his words were exactly like what was written inside her heart.

She was Aunty Hafsat’s younger sister, and they were cousins with Imran. In fact, all five of them had been raised in Imran’s family house after their father died when she was not more than nine years old.

The same way Ja’afar and his brothers took Imran as their elder brother by blood, Shariffat and her siblings also saw Dada in that same way.

With difficulty, Ja’afar wiped his own tears and began comforting her with gentle words.

After that, he held her hand and they went to perform ablution. They prayed and made long supplications, and just like the others, most of their prayers were for Imran and Dada.

He was the first to stand. He went to the wardrobe, brought out sleepwear for her, and returned to where she sat.

He held her hand and helped her stand.

“The crying is enough now. Change your clothes. The night is getting late, and my head is aching. I want to lie down.”

She wiped her tears, collected the clothes, and went toward the bathroom.

He did not stop her.

He sat on the edge of the bed. Truly, his head was aching badly, so he lay down and dimmed the room light.

Sherry’s Shyness

More than ten minutes later, she came out. His eyes were closed, but he could hear her movement.

When he noticed that she had not come near the bed, he slowly opened his eyes.

To his surprise, he saw her lying on the sofa.

He smiled slightly and called her softly, “Sherry.”

She answered in a low voice because crying had weakened her voice.

He asked, “What are you doing there?”

While rubbing her hands together nervously, she replied, “I want to sleep.”

“There?” he asked.

She nodded.

He shook his head slightly, still smiling.

Gently, he said, “Please come back here. If it is because of me, nothing will happen. We will only sleep. Come and pray for me; my head is hurting badly.”

The mention of his headache made her stand without argument and come toward him.

Still, she kept adjusting the neck of her outfit out of shyness, even though it was not revealing and did not disturb her. In fact, the clothes were a loose top and trousers.

He stretched his hand to signal her to come to his side.

When she came and tried to sit on the side drawer, he held her hand, making her sit on the edge of the bed beside him.

Their bodies brushed lightly.

He placed her hand on his forehead, and the coolness of her hand made him release a deep breath.

She also felt the warmth of his forehead.

He said nothing, and she said nothing. She began reciting prayers for his headache, blowing softly and rubbing his forehead.

After more than five minutes, she finished and comforted him.

When she tried to stand, he stopped her.

She wanted to speak, but he said, “Shhh.”

He gently pulled her onto the bed. Instead of letting her sleep far away from him, he held her close and covered them with a blanket because the room was slightly cold.

Shyness took over Shariffat completely.

Her heart was beating so hard that he could feel it.

Deep inside, she did not think anything more would happen, because in her mind, their worry over Dada and Imran did not leave room for anything else.

But the tenderness of marriage, the scent of the room, the quietness of the night, and the closeness between them changed the atmosphere. What began as comfort turned into the private beginning of their life as husband and wife.

By morning, the grooms who had been sent to their brides’ sections were very quiet.

They were busy comforting their wives and praying for blessings.

They had entered a new world, a world that becomes unforgettable on the first night for those whom Allah honors with lawful love.

All they could say to Allah was gratitude.

They also prayed that Dada and Imran would be released soon, so their happiness could become complete.

Nabeeha’s Absence

As for Nabeeha, from the moment the issue of Zak-Shadow’s arrest came up, her mind became unsettled.

At that time, she and her mother were in Umrah.

After leaving the house, her mother took her and all the children for Umrah, supposedly paid for by the First Lady.

In distress, Nabeeha pressured her mother until they returned to Nigeria.

She went through her own restlessness and panic, and eventually returned home as if everything was normal.

But once Ja’afar’s wedding began, her mother changed her mind again and left the house, returning to her own home. She did not attend the wedding at all.

Later, she pulled Nabeeha away and they went back to Dubai, where most of her activities now took place.

It was only more than three months after judgment was passed on Dada and Imran that she came briefly to the country. Even then, they did not stay long before returning again.

According to her, she could not remain in the distress and sorrow of remembering that Haysam was detained, especially when no one had been allowed to see him for almost a year.

From the time she returned abroad, she did not look back toward the country again until 2016, when Zak-Shadow and Imran had already spent three years in prison.

Imran Is Released

It was also around that time that Imran was released because of the continuous efforts of the youths, who had not grown tired of demanding justice.

Zak-Shadow’s case, however, had become much harder.

Still, they said they would not give up. They would continue the struggle.

Because of General Yusuf Shu’aibu’s insistence on seeing Dada released the same way Imran had been released, he was forced into retirement.

The dark organization had realized that he was the one standing behind the youths who were still pushing the issue of Zak-Shadow and Imran.

They had already succeeded in getting Imran out; only Dada remained.

So they quickly arranged to weaken General Yusuf because, by then, they had drawn far more politicians into their plan than anyone could have imagined.

One week after Imran’s release, General Yusuf Shu’aibu Tafida was removed and replaced by someone else.

This change created a lot of arguments and public discussion across the country and in the media.

But the government closed its ears and behaved as if it did not hear anything. It showed that there would be no retreat.

After some time, everything became quiet, and the citizens had no choice but to accept the new change.

Retired General Yusuf felt deeply hurt by what happened, but he did not show it.

He swallowed everything and moved aside as they wanted.

But there was one thing he did not give up on: making sure Imran returned to his military work.

At that time, Imran had said he no longer wanted to continue as a soldier.

But the retired General stood firmly and made him understand that only by returning to his work could they find a way to help Zak-Shadow come out before completing the twenty-five years passed against him.

When Imran heard that, he agreed to return to duty, even though he had been out of prison for only one month.

Imran Gets Permission to See Zak-Shadow

Truly, the General’s advice became useful.

Imran’s return to work gave him the opportunity to see Zak-Shadow for the first time.

When he received the order granting him that chance, tears fell from his eyes.

Imran loved Haysam deeply, a love that could not be measured, the kind Allah places in the hearts of His servants without them knowing exactly how it flows.

21 November 2016

On Monday, at eleven o’clock in the morning, Imran headed toward the Special Military Corrections Facility, North Central Command Base, where Zak-Shadow was being held.

It was a day heavier than every other day, a day that filled Major Imran Abbas’s heart with excitement and pain at the same time.

The previous night, he had not slept after receiving confirmation that his visit had been approved.

In fact, from the moment he saw the retired General’s message on his phone, he could neither sit nor stand properly.

The message read:

“It has been approved. You can see him tomorrow. Imran, do not do anything that will disturb your heart. This is an opportunity we have received.”

His heart froze and broke at the same time. His whole body tingled until Aunty Hafsat asked him what was wrong.

But he could not answer her. He only shook his head.

It had been three years since he had seen Haysam’s face.

Three years of questions.

Three years of thoughts.

Three years of guilt and the pain of separation.

Three years of feeling as if a cutting death had severed their bond forever.

Prison itself had not wounded his heart as much as the thought of what Haysam might be going through.

Carefully, he wiped the small tears gathering at the corner of his eyes.

The Special Military Corrections Facility

The next morning, Imran left home very early because of his restlessness.

Instead of going to the office, he went straight to the Special Military Corrections Facility, North Central Command Base.

He stopped somewhere far from the prison and stayed there for almost three hours until the time he was given arrived. Then he started the car and drove closer.

Slowly, his car stopped before the large gate.

The security there was different from any place Imran had ever seen.

He himself had not been kept in such a place during his own imprisonment.

Two brigades of soldiers stood at the gate. Cameras were fixed on the walls. Other guards patrolled with steps that showed serious training.

One of the guards asked, “Major Imran Abbas?”

“Yes, that is me.”

His voice sounded heavy, as if chains had been placed around his throat because of the way his mind and heart were beating fast.

The guard said, “Follow me, sir.”

Imran only nodded.

Deep in his heart, he kept mentioning Allah’s name.

He followed the guards through a long corridor that was so clean it showed the place was cared for beyond normal measure.

From there, they took him into a room also surrounded by cameras.

One of the guards said, “Drop your wallet, documents, and belt. You will be searched before entering.”

Without showing any discomfort, Imran removed his belt because he knew this was military procedure.

He had never imagined that he would come to such a place because of Haysam.

He had never imagined that one day destiny would drag them into such a pit, full of ridges and deep holes.

After the search was completed properly, they left the room and took him to a small meeting room with two tables and a glass barrier between them.

But because of his status and Zak-Shadow’s status, the arrangement was changed. They were given a special room without glass between them.

Imran’s heart was beating like the ticking iron of a clock counting seconds.

Five minutes passed.

Ten minutes passed.

Silence.

His heart beat even harder, like a war drum, because the time set for Zak-Shadow to appear had arrived.

Zak-Shadow Enters

At that exact moment, the door opened slowly.

Two soldiers entered with Lieutenant Colonel Haysam Abdul-Rasheed Shehu Kobi.

But this was not the Zak-Shadow the world had known before.

This Zak-Shadow had changed in many ways, especially from his old soldierly appearance into something different.

His hair had grown much longer than before.

His face now carried a beard, unlike before when there had not been even a trace of hair on his face because of his military discipline.

His face had become slightly lean, but the authority, dignity, and masculine nobility were still spread across it.

The mark of prayer on his forehead had become darker, and because he had stayed indoors for so long, the natural brightness of his skin had returned, the same brightness that the hardship of military life had once dimmed.

His eyes had changed too, becoming sharper and deeper, like the eyes of a dangerous serpent.

His hands were in small cuffs because of prison rules.

He had never been fat, but his body was still broad and strong, the kind of body belonging to a man who maintained himself.

Even now, one could not say he had become thin from suffering.

From the way he looked, it was clear he had not stopped exercising.

His walk confirmed it.

It was still the walk of a proud soldier, whether in the forest, in darkness, or among people. That walk of dignity and bravery had not changed.

He paused briefly before sitting.

Then he looked at the guards with his changed eyes and nodded slightly.

They knew this was not a place for joking.

Even if a hyena became thin, it remained stronger than small forest animals.

He was detained, yet even powerful people had failed to break his pride. That was why, even in detention, the respect around him had not changed.

Even a madman knew that one looked at a lion only from a distance, and even then, from behind a cage. If the lion found a hand, it could still strike.

Zak-Shadow was too great to be looked at carelessly, let alone be treated like an ordinary prisoner.

The guards quickly left them alone.

The First Meeting After Three Years

Silence filled the room.

It was a heavy silence, the kind even the sound of a gunshot might not easily cut through.

Both of them fixed their eyes on each other as if watching something in a cinema.

Imran felt tears fill his eyes, but he held them back.

His heart was crying loudly.

He had to turn his eyes aside and try to swallow the tears.

Zak-Shadow shook his head slightly and sat down.

Slowly, he leaned his back against the chair.

His changed eyes settled on Imran’s face when Imran turned back toward him, as if Imran was counting everything he had been unable to tell him over the past three years.

When Zak-Shadow saw that Imran had no intention of speaking, he moved his dry lips.

With his deep golden voice, full of pride and echo, he said:

“Major Imran Abbas.”

They were only three words.

But Imran felt them in the deepest part of his heart and brain.

With difficulty, he managed to answer:

“Sir…”

His voice could not come out fully because new tears had filled his eyes.
